Hi fellow sax-playin kiwi seeds!!!

Your mod chick here. Its been a while since a posting has been made, and since our mod dude is away for part of the week *to see an awesome band live...lucky* I've decided to post. Here we go:

-Its kiwi kuestion time once again.
What kind of band program does your school have? Like, is your band prog. more of the rehearse a million times for very few concerts a year, or are you involved on a more competitive level with other schools at Band Reviews? Do you like the program you belong to, and why? If not, what would you change or like to see change?
-Also, any big trips you've done with your band that created the band experience more fun or memorable? Any you'd like to do?

Mine was one with learning marching in the fall, and 3 band reviews, and then in the spring came the competitions with marching, concert, and jazz all in one *in different cities* up against many different schools. I loved the competitiveness, but people were very nice to each other *except for this one time...* and didn't take it to a mean level or anything *again, expect for this one time...*. I liked the program. Honestly, it was all I knew, and I assumed most programs were the same, til I met other band peeps from other cities and states and realized there were so many different programs. It was still fun though. Good memories.

As far as big trips go, I've been to Disneyland and Canada, and both were awesome experiences. I wouldn't trade them for anything. I would have, however changed the date we went to canada. We came back the day before finals and were "supposed" to study while on the trip. Ha, yeah right.

Alright, its your turn sax peeps. Answer away!!

Hi, I'm new to this community and I'm from Sydney. I don't play the sax, but I'm planning to buy an alto sax so I can start learning after I finish Year 12 (in 3 months!). I've gone on Ebay because my budget is very limited (it's great, I'm looking to buy an instrument worth about $2000 for hopefully $500 at the most because my parents have refused to invest any more money in my music education after last time!), and they have brands like "College Pro", "LongXing", "Xing Hai", "Evette", etc. which are described to be "great for beginners/ school bands". They're selling from between $100 to $400 which is perfect, but I've never heard of these before and it seems a little too cheap, so I am wary. I'd feel better buying a Yamaha or Keilwerth or Selmer, but they are far more expensive, and on Ebay, they only come second handed.

May I possibly get some advice on which brands are the best good, which brands to stay away from etc? I play the piano, but I know virtually nothing about the sax. I'm choosing the alto sax because it reads the treble clef- which is awesome, because I'm not about to learn how to read music all over again.

I'm not very easily sucked into advertising, so I haven't actually taken the plunge to buy it yet. I want to get some good advice from people who aren't commisioned to sell me their products before I actually blow a lot of money. The thing that really annoys me about Ebay is that the sellers don't tell you where the instruments were made. I suppose I could ask. I just don't want to end up with a mediocre instrument that doesn't sound well and stuffs up after 3 months.

Thankyou for any advice you can throw my way! Much appreciated.

And just to make this incredibly annoying: it's x-posted.

Hi sax-playin kiwi seeds!!

Your mod chick here. Its time for a question from this kiwi.

I was wondering, with the music you play, do you plan on taking it further, like becoming a music major or minor? Or is it more like a love for music, more of a fun to play just cause thing?

For me its just for fun. IT started our that way, and I guess I just stuck with that. Nothing more than playing. I'm in 3 bands, 2 concert, and 1 jazz, and I do it for the fun of playing.

How about you?
